Hard to say about what would pull better. The 6.2 ain't bad at yanking things around just takes some time to get up to speed, I've pulled hard with a n/a 6.2L for very long distances, They'll do it and get pretty decent mileage doing it.

I'll bet the feel of the truck's torque is telling that it's probably got at least 4.10 gears in the rear.

Try it, that's still a pretty big load.

Most I've carried behind a n/a 6.2L is a 20' car hauling trailer (tandem axel), with a C10 diesel pickup (~4300 lb), plus Honda Rancher 4wheeler (450 lb), I don't know how much the trailer weighed. Did it fine.

Back in the early 90's we pulled the same 14' camp trailer with a non-turbo 6.2 equipped truck and a Ford 7.3L non-turbo. The Ford would do somewhat better and felt stronger, but it had 4.10 gears where the 6.2 had 3.42's.

If you do (or plan) to do a lot of towing, a turbocharger wouldn't be a bad idea - especially with high wind-drag type trailers (like travel trailers).

I have owned several 6.2 rigs and they are sort of like the energizer bunny.
They just keep going anf going and going.

The 7.3 is a bigger engine and does have more power but also eats more too.

The 6.2 with good gears will pull real fine and as Jim mentioned wont do bad on mileage either.

The one thing that you need to do is to be sure the injection pump and injectors are in top shape on the little 6.2
If these are a little off the step the power fall off can be quite noticeable.

Being a Ford guy all my life<i wanted to try a 6.2 and someday I will try a cummins in a Dodge. My 300 six in my F150 pulled the trailer of 6200 good once it got moving. The 7.3 non turbo did great too.I believe this 1987 1 ton crew cab with a 6.2 4 spped will do just fine.
Thanks Bob
