I think we are going to go ahead and buy a new (good used) trailer. I have spent a lot of time searching the internet, but I am still no closer. I have seen them vary in price by a few grand. Bottom line up front, what is the best method to use when tracking down the illusive good trailer deal?

I bought a Rainbow brand car hauler with an 18' deck in 2003 from a local dealer. Rainbow trailers are made in Manitoba Canada. I really like it. The model I have is rated for 12K GVW and is a quality unit, but cost just a little more than the cheapies you'll see on the lots.

Otherwise, an email to John Kennedy (john@kennedydiesel.com) will likely help. Aside from selling trailers, he also knows quite a lot about them. :)

A friend of mine also has a 18' foot Rainbow with a tilt deck. Used it to haul 10,000 lbs before and it handled it no problem. Trailer is balanced almost perfectly. I don't know if they make a 40' though.

They do not sound local, but I think I have heard of them before. Do they have dealerships nation wide? I'll search for them later one. WHo is this Kennedy guy? Is he the one that sells upgrades for the 6.2/6.5?

If you buy a trailer from him, he's local to me and my wife is from Perry...we might be able to work out some delivery and visit her family.
