View Full Version : Flexible Exhaust couplings (SS) do they leak?

I'm in the pre-engineering stages of a new exhaust crossoverpipe for the race truck as I cracked my current one, not really due to heat, but due to lifting the engine to install Energy Suspension engine mounts.
Going to build a new one out of larger pipe, and several other related projects in the name of flow.
I'm thinking of removing an exhaust donut at the manifold and going with a flat-flange gasket and flange that will be rigid on the manifold. But, I'm concerned that due to the heat cycles that the new pipe will crack without a pivot point, and want to compensate for changes from heads/engines in the event I need to swap engine components.
Here's what I've seen, do they work for turbo drive pressure, or will they leak?

I haven't been able to locate any information saying that they're leak free, which is very very important for pre-turbo drive pressure.
Thanks!
i have one on my suburban's crossover and it works just fine

I'll have to look, but I think my 6.5 has one in the exhaust system. I thought it was stock.
I used two of them on the 225cid odd fire V6 in my Jeep. They do not leak. One advantage is that you can fix the exhaust pipe behind them. Some of the street rod guys like to use them. Most FLAPS should have them or your local muffler shop.

Hi
I was thinking about using one for the crossover i need to build for my turbo project.I even bought a couple trying to get the bigest one i could.
I found them very irregular inside. Then the one in my wifes exhaust burnt out,97 sunfire 150,000 km's
I havn't built my crossover yet,was thinking of using one piece, but am leary of leeks.I made flat flangs out of 3/8 t1 steel for both manifolds and am hoping to use without gaskets.
So far i have some manderl bends and som tubing,a mock up motor my flanges, and hoping to find someone who has built their own that works good,so i can copy their design.I want to open up the stock manifold, there is a ring that needs to come out on mine, will open it up at least 1/4".
I was thinking of one pipe that could slip into the other. Have also seen exhaust fittings that had metal slip rings, but havn't seen any since i'v started my turbo project.
Good luck let us know what you build

Thanks for the input thus far!
Yukon, here is my x-over pipe, this is a 2WD chassis. I went under the suspension. The only thing that's Banks on this truck is the manifold, the rest is entirely custom. I had the option of using Banks' x-over pipe, but it passes directly beside the oil pan, and creates other heat issues, which I didn't wish to contend with. Making 400HP makes heat, but my design was prior to the thing making this kind of power. Picture below was actually when I had just finished blowing up the original 6.2L in the truck, before installing the 18:1 6.5L

Exhaust manifold, ditto on removing the material inside the driver's side manifold. I neglected to do this in the begining, but since I've removed my pipe I looked at that and decided to do the work since I got stuff torn apart for the new turbolader.
I'd recommend removing all but about 3 1/4" mounting spots for the bung if you decide to use that, smoothing the rest. FYI also, the factory lead bung or FelPro replacement is 1-3/4" ID, quite restrictive as well, sourcing a reasonable alternative for more flow.
If you're thinking flat piece to manifold, you'll need a gasket, trust me. Banks uses a gasket at their manifold, you can get something similar to that. I'm sourcing out a replacement part that's the same as what Banks used, I HATE calling them to find the # and then paying big $$ for it and shipping and waiting a week and a half for it to arrive. When I find a source, I'm gonna buy about 30 of them and put them with by "Turbo-Stuff" boxes. Will go good with the 25 Turbo T3/T4 oil drain gaskets I got bulk buy...
this may help
