View Full Version : Will a 6.5 Turbo system work on my 6.2??
Hello folks,
I just joined this forum in search of some answers.
I have a '93 AM General Hummer w/ the 6.2L diesel, 3 sp auto.
I have an opportunity to buy a complete turbo system off a 6.5L GM diesel. I think it will work but the real issue is will it fit. I saw an old post here of someone selling a complete Banks system for the 6.2. I know this system will work but again, it's the fit issue.
I've heard that I may have to do a lift and or make some brackets or the turbo goes to the back of the engine not the front because of room/fit.
Can you guys help me with some answers please.
Thank you,
Steve

Steve,
Welcome to the board!
There isn't room for the factory pickup/Suburban turbo components. This is why AMG installed the turbo at the rear of the engine valley.
For a time, Whipple produced a supercharger that was popular with the Hummer crowd because it would fit without a lot of mods. Whipple stopped producing their super kit a while ago, but one may show up on eBay now and then.
Back in the late 1990's, a member here worked with www.peninsularengine.com (http://www.peninsularengine.com) to turbocharge his non-turbo 1995 Hummer. They modified the doghouse and then installed the turbo at the rear of the engine valley. Peninsular would be a big help if you're thinking of going that way.
Here's one of their engines.

The turbo outlet can be either to the right or left.

Thanks Jim for the quick reply. This is pretty much what I got from the Hummer mailing list as well. I was hoping that this wouldn't be such a difficult project but it's way out of my league and budget.
One member suggested either just replacing the entire engine w/ a 6.5 turbo or getting a STS turbo.

I could see an STS turbo being viable in the future for my quest for more power..
Thank you again and looking forward to reading more info here..
