Greetings. I found a Sub with a blown engine. If possible, what is entailed in dropping a 1988 6.2 into a 1995 Suburban with a 4L60E? Thanks everyone.

Is the blown engine gas or diesel?

4L60E would make it a gasser wouldn't it?

The blown engine is a 6.5 diesel. thanks.

You would need to use the front cover off the 6.5 so the crank sensor will have a home.
The water pump will have to be swapped as the serp drive turns the pump the oposite direction.

Use the 95 IP. and mix and match the high pressure fuel lines so they will fit.

Or you can use the 700R4 (4L60) with the 6.2 as it is with the exception of the water pump so your serp drive will fit.

A little wiring to get a key switched hot line to the IP.
The connections to the AC and the alternator will all hook up if you use the 95 parts.

Its workable.

Okay, thanks. I guess the 88 mechanical IP setup won't work with the 4L60E. So my question is, will the 6.2 bolt right up to the 4L60E?

It'll work with a mechanical pump, but you'll need a controller for the tranny (among other mods for the EFI to MFI change). And, yes. The engine will bolt to the tranny.

The 95 Suburban should have a 4L80E, but it doesn't really matter. Just do like the others said, and swap all the electronic parts, including front cover and injection pump, onto the 6.2L, and then drop it in. Everything else will bolt on.

The only other problem will be the oil feed for the turbo. 6.2L blocks don't have a port for the oil feed like the 6.5L's do. You'll need to run a line to another source, such as an unused pressure port right above the oil cooler lines on the driver's side of the block.

Many early 6.2L 1/2 ton pickups and Sub's were coupled with the 4L60E. The 4L60E was the electronic replacement for the 700R4, which was used widely in 6.2L 1/2 tons.

To my knowledge, no 4L60E was used behind a 6.5L. If the 95 'burb was factory equipped with a 6.5L diesel, then it should have been backed by a 4L80E. My 95 Tahoe has the 4L80E, so the heavier 'burb should definitely have it.

I'm not disagreeing with you. Just saying the 60 was used behind N/A's. I've heard of, but never seen, a N/A 6.5L/60 combo. I don't think there were any N/A 6.5L Burbs in 95, so it would have to be a 4L80E. There were, however, many (actually most) gasser/4L60E Burbs.

If a 4L60 is built well with a HD reinforced clutch drum and all the other good aftermarket stuff then it will hold a 6.5 with no sweat.

The factory used the 4L80 on all 6.5 TD. The 60 I think was used in a few N/A applications.

The 700R was used with the 6.2 apps and did fairly well even when the Banks Turbo was fit.

If you are going to swap the 88 6.2 into the truck, just use a 88-89 year model 700R4
This box is mechanical and you wont need any electronics to run any of it.

I am converting a 92 Burb that has a 454 in it with the 4L80 to a mid 80's 6.2 and using the TH400 box behind it.

Its all pretty much a mix and match scenario.
