2500 HD vs 2500 HD Classic vs 2500 Classic

I have seen all three of these listings, what is the difference?

I depends on what year models you are referring to.

If the latest models, it's like this:

2500HD = 2007+, 9200# GVWR, latest body style, LMM Duramax engine (with the Diesel option).

2500HD Classic = 2007, 9200 GVWR, 2001-2007 body style (with various front clip/hood combinations through the years), LB7 (2001+), LLY (2004.5+), or LBZ (2006.5) Duramax engine, 6 speed Allison auto (2006). The "Classic" designation generally specific to 2007, as there were 2 body styles available for that model year. GM did the same thing in 1999, and 1988. Classic denotes the earlier of 2 body styles available during the same model year.

2500 = 2007, 8600 GVWR, latest body style, no Diesel/Allison option.

2500 Classic = Same as 2500, only with the earlier (1999-2006) body style.


If you mean the 1999-2001 transition, the body style changed in 1999 for 1500 and 2500 trucks (no new 3500 until 2001), with the 6.5L Diesel available through 2000 (Duramax began 2001), with the older (1988-1999) body style.

I think I confused myself. Some of the transition dates may not be exact. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Wow.......um........ok.:confused: I should have been more specific to 2006 - 2008 years I could have saved you from all the typing, but thanks for the info.........I think. I will have to read it a few more times but I should be able to figure it out. Thanks again.:)

It isn't too complicated. Just not so easy to put into words. This is what happens when a manufacturer changes design mid model year.

If it is the new body style, it is the 2500HD (non Classic), and have the LMM Duramax option.

If it is the 1999+ body style, it is the Classic, and have the LBZ Duramax option.

All 2500HD's, 2001+, will have a GVWR of 9200#.

The 2500, classic or not, will only have the 6.0L gasser, and an 8600# GVWR.

There are other differences with the drivetrain. Do you have any specific concerns?

Yea, once I weeded out the years that I did need and read it again I figured it out. I'm looking to buy an 06 or 07 and I'm trying to figure out my options so I get what I'm looking for. Obviously the most for my money. I only have about $26k to spend. I have a half ton and a 7k lbs travel trailer, it pulls it ok but I'm looking to upgrade to a larger travel trailer and I need a bigger truck. Which is better LBZ, LMM, etc.? Most of my millage will be short distance (about 7k year) and pulling about 5 times a year.

I would opt for the LBZ (earlier models). You will likely find them with more miles, but the miles aren't that critical. If the overall condition of the truck meets your approval, reasonable mileage isn't a concern. Remaining warranty would be my only real concern, if the truck is sound. The LMM will have additional emissions baggage, and significantly lower economy and more maintenance potential/inconvenience because of it.
