Service Engine Soon

Greetings

I was driving downtown my 98 suburban and the light "Service Engine Soon" came on.
I did not notice anything on the performance of the engine. I do not pull anything and drive the suburban pretty economically.
The only thing that i noticed before the light came on is that sometime
when stopped at a traffic light (waiting for green and pressing the brake pedal - automatic transmission) the engine would rave up for half a second by 200/300 rpm. Beside that, i did not notice anything else.
I drove the truck home and next start it up again and the light was still on.
I read the owner manual (small one that came with the truck) and they
only thing they are saying is something about "emission" - that's it.

Does anyone have an idea why the light came on and how to fix my problem?

That year truck has the OBDII electronics on it. You will need to get it scanned to find out what the code is thats setting off the light.
From that point we can figure out whats troubling the little creature.

Depending on where you are, places like Autozone and Advanced Auto (and others) will read a code for a free.

I took my 98 Suburban to my mechanic and run the scanner.
It gave the code P0216 Injection Timing Control.
we looked at the "degree" for the injection pump (i do not recall the exact wordings) and showed 12.1 degree.
The scanner suggested 12.1 degree too.
Then the "Engine Service Soon" light went off.
We reset the error code.
I drove the truck 3 miles, turned the engine off and started it 2 hours later
and the "Engine Service Soon" light came on.

I also noticed that the RPM of the engine is 200 - 300 RPM faster idling at the traffic light. It has awlays been around 500 rpm and now it is at 700 rpm.

Any suggestion as to what it is causing this problem and
how to fix it ?

I trust my mechanic but you are more familiar with this kind of truck.

I thank you for all your help and making the "ZE BUS" feels better - that is what the license plate says - the children came up with that one !!!!

hard to say, temp sensor at crossoverpipe can raise the idle if defect.
try to disconnect\connect to se if the idle react.

the timing at 12.1 degree is not correct as i know,
maybe -12. ??
