I am looking at buying a 6.5 tomorrow, 160k miles.
has an exhaust noise around the turbo or blowing back through the intake, hard starting & smoking.

anything in particular I should look for?
easy fix or costly?

thanks.

You won't find much middle ground with this one. It's either very serious (run away from it), or very simple. Simple is the EGR, if it has one. It can cause both issues if it's stuck open. If it's not the EGR, or if it doesn't have one, it will probably have serious issues, likely to require significant wrenching (time and money).

It is a k3500 so there shouldn't be an egr.

Possibility of a glow plug or pre-cup coming apart & holding a valve open?

.....or a rocker arm or pushrod or ventilated piston.

Ok,

just got home from looking at it, body & interior not as clean as I would like.

Turbo appears shot, about 1/8" movement up & down.
Oil about 2-3 quarts overful.
Runs rough, with the air nozzle loose loud banging noise coming from the intake until vacuum is increased (covering intake with my hand) then noise goes away.
No blowby at idle.
No knocking noise from bottom end or from around the valve covers.

rubber air intake was loose & "air filter monitor" missing, sucking unfiltered air through this hole & around the loose connections between intake & filter.

has boost sensor code & cylinder #1 misfire code.
#1 injector has been replaced recently.
service engine light is on.

I am thinking I should let this one go but if any one has an idea of this being a cheap ($1000ish or less) fix let me know.
