Sorry for stupid questions, but I'm in the middle of disassembling my 95 6.5. My crank sprocket does not appear to have a timing mark like yours does in your photo and the photos shown in the T&R Guide. After marking a notch on the IP and the front cover, I aligned the cam sprocket mark (in the 12'oclock position) with the pump drive gear mark at the 6'oclock position. The #1 piston looked like it was right at TDC. I then removed the IP. I hope that will allow me to keep the timing right when the engine is reassembled. Could the #1 piston have been at the top of it's exhaust stroke rather than the top of it's compression stroke? Does it make any difference?

Well, on closer inspection I did find a barely perceptable timing mark on the crank sprocket after all. I did not see it and also failed to carefully study my manual on timing set removal.

All I am sure about now is that the cam sprocket timing mark was at 12:00 oclock and the pump drive gear mark was at 6:00 oclock when I removed the chain and the IP. The IP stud that polks through the slot-like hole in the pump drive gear is also at the 6:00 oclock position, right where it should be with the drive gear timing mark at 6:00 oclock.

How do I know if the IP is set for TDC or not? Could it still be set for the top of the exhaust stroke, and not TDC? Am I facing catastrophe upon startup?

With the timing marks on the Cam sprocket and the crank sprocket aligned this places the cam in the correct phase with the crank.

The drive gear bolts to the cam and is keyed, (Can't screw it up)

Once all these are right, rotate the crank to place the drive gears timing mark at the top (12 Oclock)

Index the pump gear to line its mark with the drive gears mark.

Insert the IP into the housing and index the PIN and install the bolts.

Use blue loctite on the IP to gear bolts.

The IP will index the gear only one way. The pin fits in the slot and can't be done otherwise.

With this done your set.
