sorry if its not in the right forum.
today i could not get my 89 burban to turn the key to the start position. it will go to the run position but will not go any further.
should it start if i put it in the run position & jump the starter terminals?
thanks
If all the dash lights come on like normal, the thing should start by jumping the terminals on the starter.
Likely your ignition switch or the key cylinder has an issue.

My '94 wouldn't turn off and I couldn't get the key to move at all. So I just replaced the ignition tumbler on it last night. To do that, you have to pull the wheel (13/16" socket fits the nut real snug), the spring-secured steering wheel lock ring (by removing one ring-shaped retainer from a groove the back-mounted spring decompresses allowing you to remove it), the white portion of the blinker assembly (held by 3 screws and the hazard light switch), then you can get to the one torx head retaining bolt that holds the tumbler in place. I picked up a new tumbler (Hecho in Mexico) along with a steering wheel/harmonic balancer from Auto Zone. $12 for the tumbler and $15 for the puller. Or you can also rent a puller for a $20 reimbursable fee. The steering wheel lock ring and retainer is the most troubling part of the reassembly process. Don't know how to describe what I rigged to get it done... but you need to somehow compress the spring behind the steering wheel lock ring to slip the retainer ring back over the splines of the shaft and into it's groove to secure the assembly. It took me a couple hours. Hope this helps you...

Tried to start it in the run position by jumping the terminals. did nothing but spin the starter & shot sparks everywhere!
does the "start" position power anything but the starter?
not sure, but isnt a '94 steering column different from an '89?
