I recently installed a complete turbo setup on my 88 6.2 diesel 2wd(newer body style) got the turbo, manifold and intake off a 99 6.5L 2wd. The guy said i can have the 4L80E tranny for 200 bucks. I dont know how long my 700r4 is gonna last cause i will be doing a lot of towing this winter hauling a 24 foot enclosed trailer with 4 snowmobiles inside. The truck has so much more power now since i turned up the pump and put the gm8 turbo on it (grin!) Just wanted to know if there will be any clearance issues, or issues with the shifter or speedometer? My truck does have an electronic speedo, no cable. I was looking for stand alone computers on ebay but they want over $1000! has anyone did this before? any help would be appreciated!

Hi
Glad your little 6.2 critter is doing well with the turbo.

For sure the 700R is going to be lacking for the task of towing.

The 4L80 will work fine. You will need a computer to run it though.

The stand alone kit should take care of all the issues.

These are not a cheap setup no matter who you get it from.

There is really not any easy cheap way to make the 4L80 work in place of the 700R4.

A possible better solution would be to have a good shift kit and axtra cooler installed on your 700R

I personally would spend my $$$ on having the 700R gone through and upgraded.

Even this is not a cheap plan.

A good shift kit would help a bunch.

I have always prefered the transgo products.

Since you have a newer body style, you could possibly use a 4L80E crossmember from a 91+ truck, that will help with a conversion. As far as shifting it, the simplest way is going to be with the shift computer. They're not fun to install, and get everything else in the truck working on it (like the speedo).

I've got one from TCI that I plan on putting in the drag truck.

I can say this, a properly built Th700 will handle a lot, that's what I'm still running in my race truck with the strongest 6.5 around, but it's at it's limit now.

Yeah i definitely think i will stick with the 700r4. I see you can buy ones that can handle up to 600hp. that is good enough!! the 4L80 sounds like too much of a pain in the but to install. Thank you both for your help!
