EGR and air mass sensor

Hi.
my wifes brother just bought a 1997 Tahoe 6,5TD (stock) for now
has 254000 km on it, and sounds ok....guess its the S engine

Is it possibile to remove the egr system from the truck, and the air mass sensor.
Is the EGR realy needed, doesnt it have a rep. to cause some problems.
My truck dont have the air mass sensor at the intake, and my other friend with a 1998 6,5 doesnt have it.
What it the purpose with the mass sensor ?

Can the truck be programmed to not have theese components.

The MAF is only for the EGR system. If you are removing the rest of the EGR, the MAF is only taking up space. The PCM won't be happy, but you'll have to deal with that, anyway.
