How does the poly cannister remove to access the cannister element?

What vehicle/engine? If a Duramax (this forum), the element is not separate from the cannister. The filter is replaced similar to an oil filter. You will need to transfer the WIF-sensor/water-drain at the bottom, to the new filter. If you have anything other than this, it's aftermarket, and you'll have to be more specific, or contact that manufacturer.
