I am using a Ferret instrument diesel injection detector/timing adapter #765. It works by clamping a Piezo around #1 injector line and senses the pulse of fuel being injected. The device converts this pulse into a signal that will trigger an inductive timing light, the same kind used on a gas motor spark ignition. What I want to know if anyone has used this tool and if compensation has to be made in degrees advance or retard to achieve the factory recommended timing of top dead center. The owners manual states pulse injection timing readings will generally be before TDC and 7 degrees to 10 degrees before luminosity timing readings. Sounds like you have to add 7 to 10 degrees on your dampner scale to acheive an actual TDC reading. The operator manual also states you should check the timing on another 6.2 diesel that has been actually timed for reference reading. Would appreciate any comments from members that may have used one of these tools and their opinion on it's accuracy. Thanks! Oil Burn, new member.
