surging throttle

While driving about 60mph and releasing accelerator engne surged and I heard popping in the exhaust. When I pushed pedal down rpms went up and down and rig died. Started right back up and drove fine for 20 minutes then same thing. I have recently removed catalytic converter and installed remote mounted pmd. Has anyone experienced anything like this? There is no check engine light but I have not put a scanner on it yet. Any suggestions appreciated

Check all the PMD connections and make sure the ground wire is on the pump, not the heat sink.

Ground is on pump, connections are good. pmd is never even warm when I check it, maybe a defective pmd, possibly something else? it hasn't happened again maybe some crappy fuel.
