My brother has a 1993 GMC 6.5 Turbo with mechanical ip. It has been a bear to start in the winter since he purchased it a couple of years ago. This year he changed glow plugs in it finally and it now starts noticibly better. It's still not quite right though - he describes the problem as "it will fire but not take off" without cranking and cranking and cranking when it gets really cold (like 10 degrees F).

We changed the fuel filter this fall and something odd happened that I hadn't seen before - when purging the air out of the filter by opening the valve on the top, no fuel ever came out of the filter. The pickup was able to start and run anyway, so we just went on our way. I'm wondering if this was an indication of a fuel line/deliver problem that is contributing to the cold weather starting.

If anyone has any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
