View Full Version : Which thermostat?

I have searched and there is a lot of conflicting information.

I have the high output serpentine water pump and the stock single thermostat crossover. I want the 195 degree. Which thermostat should I use on my 6.2L?

Part #?

Is it the RS 354? Hopefully something from either Napa (local) or Summit (will be placing a large order) to save on having to pay extra shipping.

thanks!

Sounds like you need the factory 6.5TD thermostat for a 1992-1995 engine. That will get you 195 degree stat with the proper bypass mechanism.

The need for a bypass is what confused me. Do I want a bypass stat or not? Why?

Sure looks like the little criter.

I always use the 180F stats in my 6.5's Temps still run around 190 once the stat is fully open.

Just gives the stat a chance to get open and for coolant to start flowing into the radiator before the temps get way out of line.

195 is great for emissions and efficiency but I dont like the results in the summer.

Even with a fresh Radiator, good water pump and proper stats, these engines can get hotter than I like to see.

GM sells a 180 stat that fits the 6.2/6.5 so does Prestone.

Best

I see no mention of the vehicle year etc. Thermostat application is based on which crossover you are using. I tend to suggest that you take a peek at what lies inside first to verify rather than guess. Lots of stuff can get changed over the years and various owners.

We still stock the 354 and 370, but you'll need to verify first.

sorry, I thought I had my signature filled out. It is an '89 3/4 ton suburban.

It is a custom build using 6.2l bottom end with girdle, 6.2l heads with diamond pre-cups and roller rockers, serp setup with HO water pump, and a banks turbo for now.

I think the t-stat crossover that I have on there and plan on using will not work with the '94 serp setup. The outlet interferes with the alt/idler pulley bracket. I am guessing I need the single stat crossover from a serp setup 6.x.

Thanks for the pic, I had already made the assumption that you were using the 88-95 6.x crossover, which is for the accessories you're running.

Yes, I think you're gonna run into troubles with that crossover and the accessory package you've selected.

I've got one off a 1993 if you're interested.

I made the assumption that I had the correct one. How much are you looking for the '93 crossover?

The crossover in the pic would get the 370 series stat. The 354 is fior the crossover that has the stat rim sitting flat horizontal versus vertical.

Look at the spring and disk than look at the bypass port and you will see that there is no way the disk will block anything.
