View Full Version : Cummins conversion, best year?
Hey everyone
I'm trying to plan out a Cummins conversion for my 1993 3500 Chevy.
I might try to buy a block for around $400 and then build up from there.
What engine block year would be best for this conversion?

I would look for a 94+ 5.9L 12 valv CUMMINS if it was me. Try and find a complete one out of a 96-98 as it will have the P7100 IP and most all of the better stock pieces.
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.
I also would not rule out the 89-93 blocks with the VE pump. While they don't have as much power potential as the later Cummins, they still are easily tuneable for about 400 hp. Apart from that that, they are simpler, more quiet and get better fuel economy.
Ed,
I'm considering the a simlar swap into my 83. I may have a deal lined up for a Cummins from a Dodge truck (2wd, 1st gen 12 valve) with 5 speed manual. I would like to keep the manual transmission and convert it to 4wd. Do you have any advise on putting them in the 82- 91 generation trucks/ subs? Any kits out there?
