Is it possible and how hard would it be to convert an automatic to a stick.

Anything is possible. Might want to start with what year truck you are considering.

The NV4500 was offered for that year. Mostly a matter of collecting the parts although I'm not clear on the communication between the electronic automatic transmission and the engine computer - not sure if you'd have to swap engine computers as well.

My 1990 Suburban (same body style as your 88 crew cab) was converted to manual transmission. It has a NV5600 6 speed transmission from a 2001 Dodge. I'm using a hydraulic master clutch cylinder off of a 87-90 Jeep Wrangler which engages the stock Dodge slave cylinder. The Jeep master cylinder is better built than the GM's and gives a light pedal feel. Is your truck diesel?

I just completed a conversion on my '94 C/K from auto to manual. It was not a hard project to do. The only issue I had to deal with was the 5 speed was about 2 inches shorter than the auto, so I had to have a longer driveshaft made. I used my '96 C/K as the donor vechicle for all of the clutch, master cylinder, etc. parts. Everything bolted up fine. Even used the t-case from the back of the auto.
