I just finished installing pyro and boost gauges and I am looking for reference numbers for exhaust temps. I am currently towing a 2006 Nomad 32 FT TT. Dry about 6600. This Saturday, I am picking up the new 5er, dry about 8400. Can anyone give me basic guidelines for what I may see, what is good and most important, what is BAD!!

Thanks in advance for the help.

Is your Pyro pre turbo or post turbo?

Might look at this post http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/showthread.php?t=36347&highlight=turbo+temp

Lots of good advise there. Go down to about the 6th reply from More Power. He's one of the regulars here and has sound advise.

The Duramax is rated for 1400F EGTs, continuous.

While it would be unadvisable to use this specification as a guideline, it is very unlikely that you'd see these temperatures at all, if running stock fueling. You have already improved efficiency by opening up your exhaust.

My thought is that you can run 1100-1200 EGTs all day long and never worry about hurting anything. Some people will cringe at this, but I routinely tow 12K#-14K# loads over long distances and get used to seeing these numbers in the summertime, especially when headed west into prevailing summer winds of Nebraska on I80 with tall and wide boat loads.

Never had an internal part failure, over 500K miles and six Duramax powered trucks (3) LB7s, (1) LLY and (2) LBZs...(looking for wood to knock on...) ;)

Use good oil. It gets pounded under these conditions. Watch your water and trans temps, that is what gets out of range first on later model trucks - and is your first indicator of high oil temps due to turbocharger dumping heat into the oil...search forums lots of discussions on this, you'll likely not see it at 8500# - 9000# towing weights, anyway.

Relax, and have fun. Don't run smokey tunes while towing. Eat a fiber rich diet and hug your wife and kids...

What Mark said is pretty much what I have experienced. I try to hold max egt @ 1350 or less for as short a time as possible. When on open western roads heading west esp into a headwind egts creep up onto 11-1200 easily at 22000#.

Thanks for the info Mark. I was basically looking for a base line and thats what you provided. Towed home the new 5er on Saturday. First time towing a 5er after towing TTs for years. WOW what a diff!! Even though it is 1800 LBS heavier than my old trailer, it felt like it was easier on the D Max to tow. Exhaust temps no different from TT to the 5th, About 950 to 1020 at 70. Seemed a bit better with the 5er. It sounds like if I use 1200 as a good "safe" point, I should be OK, and it looks like I will expect to see a spike climbing mountains. 1300 to 1400 will be my short term "Spike" MAX limit.

Thanks again for the great info. Gotta go pack the new camper!
