View Full Version : homemade PMD cooler tech!

I have fixed up a cooler for my PMD "or is it CMD now?" A couple of $5 aluminum fin coolers an external fan $10 with a timer switch $21 that I can run 1 to 60 min. I had to solder the circuit board together, the preassembled timer switch was $98.

this is the timer switch that I will start after I turn the truck off. It will activate a relay that will power the fan. for the predetermined amount of time I set.

What would be the place to position the fan I.E. over the pmd or the fins? I currently have it mounted over the pmd side blowing away from the unit.

Where do you think would be the most ideal place to mount it?

The PMD is designed to shed heat through the mounting pad so I'd put the fan on the fin side of the heat sink. Nice job!

Yes - 2 thumbs up! I agree with John. The fan should go on the other side. Next question is where will you mount it?

Externsion harness is on order I will have to think about the location a little more.

So I got all the wiring done everything works as is should. With the ignition on the fan will be running, when I shut the ignition off I hit the timer switch and run the fan another 15minutes.

Still have to make the brackets for mounting the cooler. I think I will mount the cooler right next to the drivers side batt. There is a slot there that's the perfect size. The fan will be mounted downward and will pull air from the fender slot beneath it.

Here's the best part!! I about died of laughter when I stood back to get a look at it. I thought HELL somebody's gonna walk by my truck take a peek in the window and think GEEZ this truck's gonna detonate at any second!!! LOL!!! HMMM not so funny I suppose! I will have to do something better with the timing switch!

I just don't what yet... anyway its proof of concept so far ..

Glad to see you relocated the fan. BTW, the spacers are not only unnecessary, but diminish the fan effectiveness.

And that spot may not be cool enough, but a very nice job!

Ditto, get the fan smack up against the fins or make a shroud so that every cubic foot of air that is moved by the fan gets passed through the fins.

As for location, if you decide that under the hood is too warm, many here have theirs mounted to the skid plate or radiator support or in the bumper. I personally have mine mounted on the frame rail above the lift pump, I have never had a problem.

Could the timer be switched by a relay that activates when the ignition power is cut? That way you don't have to remember to push the button, and it could be mounted out of sight (fewer bomb squad calls that way).

Great to see folks taking the interest to get the PMD on a cooler.

It's amazing after all the years that this has been such an issue that GM dealers still con people and put the PMD back on the IP down in the Hole under the manifold.

I will be quite honest here, the work that you have gone and the little goodies, although quite comendable are not really needed.

Get the PMD on the little finned cooler and get it out of the engine bay completely.

I personally have used spots behind the grill as well as on the inside of the front pan that folds down from under the radiator.

Just simple free flowing cool air is all thats needed to keep the PMD in fine shape.

Using a DTECH (aftermarket) PMD has proven to be the best overall fix so far.

Stanadyne, after all these years has finally come up with the "Bullet proof" PMD, welllll now, why didn't they offer us something back when these troubles first came about

Just keep the PMD out of road spray and huge amounts of water and your set.


The biggy is just getting the thing away from the underhood heat.

I would not use a Stanadyne PMD on a dying bet.

Possibly haveing an old used one that still worked as a spare in the glove box would be OK.

When you get everything settled and decide where your going to mount your cooler. Use Dielectric grease in all you plug connections. Just one more future headache eliminated.

I would put it in the cab if I could find a way to get the harness through the firewall. I made the fan mounts adjustable so I will make it alot closer.

That was the original intent when I started this but all the timing switches need to be activated manualy. That's what I understand at least from the chat I had with the employee of the the electronics store.

I envisioned something like an electric fan on a FWD car, it runs after shutdown to cool the radiatior. I was told I need a computer to do that.

I think I'll try to put the timer in the ashtray to keep it out of site. fan tight to the cooler fins. Unless I can't find a good place to mount it I.E. cool contained space.

While I do realize now that having a fan attached does limit my mounting locations. I just want to make the pmd last as long as possible, they're expensive!

It does run alot better with new pmd. I swapped in the #5 resistor and it runs smoother and doesn't stink as bad. I almost like this truck again, until I look at the laundry list other items that need to fixed. Here I am diddling around with some fan!! lord help me! :)
