View Full Version : DTC 44 - EGR Pulse Width Error code
Could a faulty gas cap cause a DTC 44 - EGR Pulse Width Error code? I filled up my truck last night and this morning my "check engine " light flashed for a moment. Only had 3 miles since fill up so I'm asking.
truck has been running well subject to the change in oil pressure reading? The gauge has always read 35 to 50. Last week it jumped up to read 45 to 60?. funny thing is, it seems to have better power and feels more responsive. i have only had the truck for 2K miles, so i'm still feeling things out, it definitely doesn't sound and drive like my 84. Hopefully I don't have to visit my local diesel shop for a fix, that's always a $2-300 dollar bill just for walking in :(
thanks.....

DTC 44 should not be caused by a bad cap. If you have reason to suspect the cap, for any reason, replace it. They're cheap. Make sure you get the right cap (specific to Diesel).
Poor vacuum (leak or bad pump), failed solenoid, or poor wiring connection can.

For testing purposes only..... (I can't recommend you tamper with your emission system)
Try an upgrade to and "F" code emissions system. This will eliminate the EGR entirely. You can also get a "chip" to remove the EGR commands (I recommend Kennedy's), or source a 1994-95 ECM equipped similar to your truck. An F code intake can be had for not much $$, or free. California only smog tests 98+ Diesels, so don't worry about that while you are conducting your "test" (but don't misplace your old parts, in case you need them later).
I didn't see any leaks, cant imagine what an injector pump would run, yikes!
I have an "F" code engine, so am I good to go with the intake? The Truck is originally from back East so....??. I didn't see any webbing inside the intake when I had it pulled apart. How can I tell if I have the "right" intake?
The "test chip" will remove the EGR commands, but I could have actual mechanical issues as well right? I will do a thorough once over tomorrow and look up the "Kennedy" chip but I might be looking for a mechanic soon. unfortunately only 1 garage in my area that works on diesels....nuts
thanks ......

Vacuum pump. NOT an IP. But, that doesn't seem to be the issue.....
If you have an F code truck (8th digit of the VIN), you have NO EGR. Therefore, the code is bogus. Forget the mechanical/physical diagnosis, you won't find what you're looking for.
You need a new PCM, if you are getting EGR codes on a F code. Perhaps The PCM has been replaced prior to you getting the truck, with the wrong one.
Replacing a chip on your truck does not require a trip to any mechanic. It's a chip. Pop out the old one, and plug in the new. The PCM is behind the glove box, and the chip plugs into it. If you can R/R radio knobs, you can "chip" your truck. You don't need one to cure your problem, but they are very nice to clean up the programming, improve power, and increase economy (if you can not use the power). Have a look at what Kennedy has to offer at www.kennedydiesel.com . The 94-95 trucks are unique, in that they actually have a chip. Later models require a PCM reprogram, and earlier models don't use a computer for fuel mapping.
here is something strange......I was getting a DTC 44 code with my scanner, mechanic check it prior to clearing system and he pulled a DTC 35 code, injection pulse width too short?
He cleared the system and I drove home. I checked it again and it says no codes exist...not sure what DTC 35, search continues.....
DTC 35 is a pump code. Try running a heavy dose of a good fuel additive, like FPPF. It may be just a fluke.
You don't need a scanner on a '94. You can read the codes with a paperclip with no errors.

hey guys! Sorry to bring up an old thread but I'm also getting a code 44 and 45 on my 95 'F' vin Suburban.. its the only codes I'm getting what do you think? I know I don't have an egr so that's why I'm puzzeled. I did get a new k&n cone filter and the SES light does not come on as much.
Thanks
How are you reading the codes? Seems some code "readers" are not literate in Diesel.
No errors with the paperclip method.
