View Full Version : Another pesky VIN request . . . please

I posted this VIN request inside another thread that I had started, on a different vehicle, so it occurred to me that if I want to catch the attention of those of you who take the time to do the VIN check "favors" on this site, I had better put the request in a thread by itself, so here it is: Could somebody run a VIN check on a 2006 LBZ 4 door Crewcab Dually Chevy, 1GCJK33D46F163450? A build sheet would be great, too, if you have the time. I'm scheduled to fly 250 miles to check out another truck entirely (on which GMTech very graciously ran a VIN check for me on). However, this truck cropped up with 50,000 less miles (65,000 as opposed to 112,000). I'd really like to go check out this truck (locally) in person a VIN check would really, really be appreciated. It is being sold at a Ford dealership, and they claim they can't run Chevy's VIN. Seems like BS to me (maybe there's something BAD they don't want me to see? Of course, it is never a good sign to see a Chevy being sold at a Ford dealership. Makes me think owner wasn't particularly happy with performance of the truck (or had mechanical problems. (However, it is an original owner who traded it in after 4 years, so who knows; how unhappy could he have been??) Help (again) would really be appreciated. I'm driving myself and everyone around me crazy looking for a used truck. Until this economy, I always bought new. . . Used is a whole 'nother ball game. Thanks again.

Thanks GmTech--you rode to my rescue again. There is such a clean warranty record (lack of repairs) on this 2006 LBZ. Should I be worried that not a single one of the "normal" LBZ problems have cropped up, such as the leaking transmission cooler lines or the steering shaft issue? This truck has only 65,000 miles on it, which I am very happy about. But, are the 2006-2007 "common" problem issues prevalent enough that I can expect some of those problems to appear in the near future, since they didn't crop up during the warranty period, and thus, didn't get resolved then? ...Am I being paranoid, thinking problems are lurking in my future if I buy this truck, instead of being happy that its VIN check is so clean? It's just that everything is so expensive to fix on these Duramax/Allison trucks, and if I had money lying around to cover repairs, well-- I would be flush enough that I would be searching for a new truck, not a used one!! I'm definitely making myself crazy over my truck hunt.

When i test drove this truck, it idled and shifted smoothly; appeared to have plenty of power, and tracked down the road straight and true. I'm going back to the Ford dealership tomorrow and take the truck to a Chevy dealership for assessment. I'm a little worried because, to me, the truck smelled like it had been severely overheated at some point (could this possibly be because the transmission coolant lines failure actually did happen, after all, but after expiration of warranty, so that it wouldn't have shown up on the warranty work VIN check??). Also, since the Ford dealership didnt steam clean the engine, it looks pretty grimy and abused (to my untrained eyes). So I definitely need to have the truck checked out by a Chevy service guy. Overheating could be the reason the owner traded it in at a Ford dealership and bought a new Ford!! Thanks again GMTech, for both the VIN check and build sheet.

The smell might be from the detailing the dealer does to a used vehicle. They pressure wash and use chemicals to clean and shine. But it is a good idea to have a second opinion and do a car fax on it also just to be sure it isn't a flood damaged or other issue that warranty wouldn't have picked up on.

Cowboywildbill,

I want to thank you for your invaluable input and advice on my several recent posts requesting assistance in evaluating used LBZ's for possible purchase. Your realtime experiences have been very helpful. I've been really curious though about why the heck you traded off your LBZ during the Congress -- with only 19k miles!! Did you just get new truck fever? I know they probably had some of those nice new Chevy's on display at the Congress. When I first read about your trading your LBZ in with 19k, I thought "why can't I find an LBZ with this kind of low mileage," then I quickly remembered that those type of low mileage LBZ's are costing about $5000 or $6000 more than I have to spend.

Anyway, back on topic: it would be great if the smell on this prospective truck was just caused by detailing. I am on my way back to the dealership now to take the truck to a Chevy house to be thoroughly checked out.

One downside to this truck is it has those ridiculously small OEM mirrors, not the nice Ford-like extending camper mirrors with the convex portion at the bottom. Any ideas, anyone, what a dealership would charge to change those to the camper ones. We have a six-horse slant, and you absolutely cannot see the back end of the trailer with the OEM mirrors. I told myself I absolutely would NOT buy a truck without the camper mirrors...

If it's a good truck, you can always change the mirrors after you get it.

Upon my second visit to the Ford dealership (this time dragging my husband along)--to see the 1-owner 2006 crewcab dually 3500 LBZ DURAMAX, with Lt3 options, upgraded wheels and rims, and aftermarket DVD player (and with only 65,000 miles on it), I decided that I really like the truck much more than my first impression yesterday. I believe that when I first saw the truck yesterday, I was just freaked out over the scary nature of buying a used Duramax instead of a new one, and let those fears color my assessment of the truck. All the records on this 2006 truck are very reassuring.*The VIN check is very clean; showing ONLY glow plug reprogramming during its entire warranty life. I did find out, though, that the Ford dealership replaced transmission cooling lines on the truck (a common LBZ problem) before putting the truck on the lot to sell. Im really kinda relieved that this common problem cropped up already and was fixed; hopefully with new and improved fittings on the cooling lines. The
CARFAX one owner report was also very clean, and the Autocheck report that the dealership had run when the truck was traded in to it was likewise clean.*So, long story longer--today, after test driving it again, I am now sitting at a Chevy dealership waiting for them to do an extensive "used car inspection" of the truck--same level of inspection as if I were trading the truck in to this Chevy dealership for their ultimate resale. Even though this truck looks, sounds, and drives great; I need the "impartial" inspection by a Checy dealership to feel at peace about my purchase of the truck; mainly because this Chevy truck was traded in by its owner to a FORD dealership; and the owner then bought a brand new 2011 Ford. I have always been wary of vehicles traded in "outside their brand"--but especially trucks because there us so much brand loyalty in connection with truck owners. Generally, owners return to the same brand of dealership (Ford owners go back to Ford; Chevy owners go back to Chevy or GMC--if they had a good experience with their old truck. I did find one comforting fact; the owner has a long history of buying Ford trucks from the general manager of this dealership, who is supposedly his friend, so maybe it is as simple as the GM offering such a great deal to switch back to Ford that the owner decided to trade back to his original truck brand for that reason alone. At any rate, just to be sure there aren't hidden defects that soured owner enough to jump ship back to Ford;*I am taking this extra (and fairly expensive) step of an impartial evaluation by a nearby Chevy dealership; just to be sure about the overall mechanical health of the truck.*

I wasn't able to bargain quite as good a deal on this 2006 as I had on the 2007 GMC (because I was dealing with dealership, not private individual!!) but I still feel good about the price, due to fairly low miles. I also negotiated to have figured into the purchase price the *installation by the Ford dealership of the nice GM camper mirrors, to replace the dinky OEM mirrors on the truck now (thanks JohnC, for that suggestion) I want to thank ALL of you who have helped me on this quest; it has been quite a journey and I wouldn't feel nearly as comfortable with my purchase of a used truck without you guys. *It takes a village... *PS Overheating smell I was worried about earlier in connection with this *2006 truck was indeed caused by steam clean of engine sending the "hot wet" smells into interior through the vents, according to the Chevy tech who is now putting truck through its paces. *Thanks to cowboywildbill for that input; you hit the nail on the head that it might be nothing to worry about. *I'll report back after Chevy tech finishes; if it passes, it will be mine, all mine!!

Somebody's gotta play the bad guy - might as well be me.

You're buying a USED truck. There's gonna be issues with it, no matter how nice it looks and how good the reports (chevy, carfax, mechanic, etc) are on it. If you want a truck that is guaranteed to not have any issues then you need to buy new, but even then you're going to have some things go wrong - but you'll have the warrantee to back it up.

Just looking at all the reports that you (and Enigma) have had generated in the past few weeks should show you that, if nothing else. Seems like each of those vehicles have had several problems before 20,000 miles.

I got a new-to-me truck in November, an '05 LLY Ext cab LB 4WD with 123,000 miles on it. It had a 30/30 warrantee offered by the dealer: 30 seconds and 30 feet. I filled it up and the tank started leaking diesel onto the ground: some bozo 5th wheel installer had drilled through the bed to mount the hardware - and kept drilling until he punctured the tank. I fixed it myself and didn't complain to the dealer. I've been having to add coolant to the overflow tank since I got it, finally fixed it last week: the hose clamp wasn't doing it's job and allowed pressurized coolant to drip out. The truck had a busted taillight. It doesn't anymore. The wiper blades were shot. I had to replace half of the exterior lights on it (driving lights, low beams, marker lights). Changed the transmission fluid and external filter along with the engine oil and filter and air filter within a week of owning it. I will be changing the transfer case fluid and both differential fluids soon.

It is a used truck. Expect issues and you won't be disappointed when you find them.

Just sayin'.

Good luck with your new truck! I love mine :)
