Hi
I'm in the prossess of fixing up a 03 sierra after buying it from an insurance company. It is a 1500 with 6.0 engin.Does it have wiring in place for a brake controller? If so what make does it requier ?According to the build seat it has fifth wheel wiring in place. It has the temp guage for the auto trans, and 8 hole wheels,i'm assuming it's a 1500HD.
Thanks Thomas

Yes, it is pre-wired for trailer brakes. If it didn't come with one, you can get the adapter harness that plugs into the junction box on the firewall forward of the E-brake pedal. Be sure to get the 2003-2005 harness, as before/after are different. Autozone and most RV supply stores should have it. Also, the chassis is a 2500 (non HD), although it is badged a 1500. If it has 8 lug wheels and 4 (regular) doors, it is in fact a 1500HD. This was replaced by the 2500 (non HD) crew cab, after a snag with weight ratings vs. series badging. The 8,600 GVWR pushes it outside the 1/2 ton allowance for the weight and emissions ratings (USDOT/EPA).

Any brake controlers work better then others in these trucks?

Personal preference. I don't like some used by others, and some others don't like what I use. There are several technologies/types to choose from. Choose the controller compatible with your truck, and your needs. Just make sure the controller is rated for the heaviest trailer you will ever tow. The light duty (less expensive) controllers do not work, or do not work well, with 3 axle brakes, and some heavy duty controllers are too aggressive for lighter trailers. This is why there are so many to choose from. None of them do everything perfectly.

One of my favorites is the Primus IQ by Tekonsha. If you've heard of the Prodigy, the Primus IQ is essentially a Prodigy in a lesser expensive shell. Tekonsha has phased out the Prodigy and replaced it with the more expensive Prodigy P2. They then took the Prodigy guts and stuffed them into the Primus housing, for a lesser expensive alternative.
You should be able to pick up the Primus IQ for well under a $100. It's an excellent controller for the money.
Don't be fooled by cheaper controllers at the stores. The cheaper ones are time-based, and therefore quite dangerous. They don't apply trailer brakes in a panic stop. You want an inertia-style controller.

Thanks for the replys
This will be the wifes truck, but i will nave use of it for towing occasionly.I still have my signeture truck for the real loads.I'll get a new controler and harness for this one.It has so many electrical options i was hoping adding a controler would be a plug and play. This one is going to be a wiring nightmare when things begine to fail.
Going on Holidays till the end of the month, then i will finish the truck.Kind of wish it was a Dmax/.Alli truck. But then i would have another truck the wife wouldn't use. Then i would have to get rid of it.She is taking a shine to this one with all the creature comforts.
