View Full Version : Steering shaft keyed?

Does anyone know if the steering wheel is keyed to the shaft and the shaft to the steering gear box (and everything in between)? I mean, if the wheel is centered, does that mean the box is also centered, or can the wheel be put on wrong?

Thanks,

No one knows, huh?

OK, I'm guessing the answer is "no". The reason I'm going with "no" is that I currently have about 1/8 turn more to the right than to the left from "wheel straight", so, when the wheel is straight, I don't think the box is centered.

John it's been a while since I had mine apart. But I seam to recall a key or flt on the steering box and the steering wheel is splined with a guide where about 3 grooves are left out.

If my memory is correct it has a master spline.

could something else be limiting the travel in one direction or the other?

I'm trying to find the center of the gear box travel without taking things apart. Right now, when I'm in the center of the available travel the wheel is slightly off center.
