Just wanted to post this for other newbies and none mechanical geniuses out there searching for answers.

The problem (see here (http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/showthread.php?t=39469)) was a sudden onset of significant motor vibration/shaking - i.e. a miss.

The solution turned out to be a broken valve spring.

The hitch in the diagnosis was my inexperience. I thought that I had confirmed that all the valves were holding and from there I should have done a compression test which would have shown me that #8 had zero (0) compression and pointed be back to redoing the blow-by testing (and also narrowed my looking down to cylinder #8).

Oh, well. Not a huge loss - time, and cost to rework the injectors - which were testing low anyway. Hopefully a new spring and all will be even better (with the reworked injectors) than before.

Just an FYI.

When I find a broken valve spring I always wonder what's up with all the others...

Valve springs are inexpensive, and very easy to replace (heads on). Just do it, and sleep well.
