On my HMMWV 6.2, the oil filter sticks out (horizontal) like a sore thumb and it is going to hit my brake linkage. It seems there's a bolt that one can buy to mount the filter directly to the block and ditching the adapter itself. Like this, pictured on the left.

The bolt is part #1.

Well it appears I've answered my own question. I simply removed the 90 degree adapter, screwed the filter adapter fitting (Part #001) directly onto the block and now the filter just seals directly onto the block, eliminating the adapter. It seems the HMMWV's front driveshaft passes under the filter, within inches. So that would explain the horizontal filter setup.

That's correct. The only difference, as you've discovered, is the nipple vs. the adapter. The same applies to late 2wd vs. 4x4 trucks (front shaft was moved to that side).

Thanks for the confirmation. :)
