View Full Version : brakes dragging after abs activation
First snow in Anchorage this a.m. and had a new issue with my 94 K2500 Suburban. After a few times of the abs firing, while in 4x4, the right front brake was dragging to the point of releasing some of the magic smoke. On the way home from church I could pull the fuse for the brakes and drive a little ways and then plug the fuse back in and it wouldn't drag until the abs fired again. When I got home I unplugged the brake pump motor wires from the brake control box and I could lock the wheels up and not have a dragging issue when I started off again. Also found the right rear tire at about 15 psi while the rest were at 50. The most disturbing thing is that with the dragging brake and abs firing I had no braking action at all, hard pedal but no slowing. Which is quite skippy on ice going down hill.

I have an absolute HATRED for these ABS systems for the very reasons you are seeing.'
Hard pedal, inability to stop, dragging brakes and all sorts of other grief.
To keep the system working your looking at replacing the ABS Module
(Unit on the LH inner fender)
Replacing these means a large chunk of $$$$$$$$ is going to go away from your check book, about $1000 the last time I checked.
Buying a "Good Used one" is a real gamble too.
Just forgetting to reinstall the fuse or to hook the pump wires back up so you can do an extended TEST may be a very good way to handle this.
I am TESTNG the one in my 95 this way and so far the TEST is going quite well. The rig stops every time.
I will not get on my soapbox, as it would be long and tall on this subject. ;)

I'm thinking that is probably the way I'll go. There is already a multitude of stock items that are no longer present, modded, or disabled so what is another. Vacuum pump gone and Heath turbomaster installed, Heath pmd relocater installed, Racor filter replaced stock filter, low pressure switch and idiot light for fuel system, carpet coming out to make way for Rhino lining, etc. It is becoming one of those rigs I hate to buy that leaves you cursing the previous owner. If I had the coin and the shop the front axle would become a solid with manual hubs, auto tranny for a 5 speed manual, and other mods to make it into the hunting and fishing buggy that AK demands.

when was the last time the brake fluid was flushed....it will affect the abs
Hmm. Hadn't thought of that. I would guess never on the brake fluid change, but I am the third owner of it.

I've had the ABS "lock up" every now and then. Just figured it had something to do with an 18 year old system. But did a flush and fill on the brake system the other week because the master cylinder fluid was looking a bit murky. Noticed that cleared up all the problems and haven't had a "lock up" since then.
At the very least, you should flush and fill every now and then anyway.
