Where to start…. This 2 wheel drive Suburban is a rare vehicle – a 1500 truck but with a 6.5 L turbo diesel motor and 8 lug wheels from the factory. It currently has about 234000 miles on it and it has been used the past 1.5 years to pull a 2 horse trailer – 5500 lbs max loaded with our 2 Arabs and tack. Tow controller included. Previously, it had been a basic 8 passenger (3rd row seat included) general use people mover. It is biodiesel ready and has run ASTM certified biodiesel on and off the past several years when it is available. Starts immediately and runs smoothly. No CELs. Transmission shifts nice and smooth. Dark blue exterior with blue cloth interior. Though it’s a nice Sub, we need a real pickup – more horses are in the future, so it’s time to find the Sub a new home.
Note: This Sub was run on waste vegetable oil (WVO) for 80K miles, the last 20K or so miles have been on diesel or biodiesel ONLY. The entire fuel system from tank to injectors has been replaced in 2010/11 and has only has only been run on diesel or biodiesel.
I have removed all the WVO conversion items. If the buyer wants this Sub to convert back to WVO I can provide advice, some parts BUT NOT ALL and a second fuel tank for WVO. The tank fits well attached to the drivers side frame rail. This vehicle is one of the ideal models to run on WVO. I stopped running WVO because my oil source stopped. It ran very well on WVO.
Condition:
Mechanically – Very Good. A set of Kennedy Diesel quick heat glow plugs, injection pump (IP), high output water pump, pittman and idler arms and harmonic balancer were installed in Feb 2011. Bosch injectors and return lines were installed in 2010. Brakes are good. Tires are load range E Michelin LTX A/T2s with about 6-7/32” remaining (half worn). AC/Heat all work fine. Alignment done after pittman/idler arms installed. I just replaced the fuel tank and lines with new in October 2011.
Cosmetically - Pretty Good. The interior looks fine – there is one 2-inch tear in the drivers seat edge. A ¼” piece of vinyl is missing from the rear passenger door card. The exterior is a 10 footer. Looks fine from 10 feet. Some scratches a few dings and paint chipping but overall fine – NO RUST.
What’s not working:
Electric drivers door window does not operate. I installed a new regulator and switch and there is 12v to the motor, but no go. The rear HVAC switch in the ceiling is broken – since the rear HVAC can be operated by the driver using the front set I left it. Both outside mirrors are now manual. The electrics broke so I installed 2 manual ones – they work fine. Drivers door is harder to shut than the other 3 – it works but requires more force.
Now here is the really good part – lotsa upgrades:
1. PMD (pump mounted driver) on the injection pump has been replaced with a more reliable aftermarket unit by DTech and it has been removed from the injection pump and mounted in front of the drivers battery for cooling purposes – works great.
2. Battery cables replaced by me – built from extra heavy duty cabling and solder joints – no crimping and NO corrosion.
3. 2 batteries with top and side posts installed in 2008
4. AC compressor replaced 2008
5. Remote fuel filter head on drivers side near battery with 2 micron screw on filter (either Wix or Baldwin). The original fuel filter housing in V8 V has been removed, but I have it if you want it. The new setup is much easier to replace and cleans the fuel much better.
6. OEM electric lift pump replaced by 2 facet electric pumps in parallel in same location - FRAM G3 fuel filter in line before fuel pumps - easily replaced at each oil change.
7. Oil pressure switch (OPS) relay installed – original design had no relay causing OPS failures.
8. Lifetime alternator and starter.
9. Vacuum pump removed and replaced with Heath Diesel Turbo Master and shorter serpentine belt. The vacuum pump on this truck only works the turbo wastegate, which the turbo master does in its place.
10. Aftermarket exhaust installed with 3” down pipe to 4” straight out back. A new crossover was also installed.
11. Bilstein HD shocks all around. – lifetime guarantee.
12. Pioneer stereo
13. Depo Euro headlights with protective covers
14. Upgraded oil cooler lines - no drips - from Lubrication Specialists.
15. Magnafine inline transmission oil filter and GM transmission pan with drain plug installed. The Magnafine cleans the tranny oil much better than the in tranny filter and the pan makes fluid changes much simpler.
16. New parts recently installed listed above. (fuel tank, fuel lines, injection pump , water pump, glow plugs, harmonic balancer, pittman/idler arms, Bosch injectors 2010)
And these spare parts may come with the Sub if you want them and your offer is reasonable or I may sell these separately.
1. Several fuel and oil filters. 2 air filters.
2. Intercooler Kit - $400 in parts using article from the dieselpage
3. EGT gauge
4. Used turbo/vacuum gauge and new turbo boost bolt – allows installation without drilling
5. 3 pod A pillar gauge mount
6. Fuel pressure gauge
7. Extra used but perfectly working DTech PMD. I replaced it with the DTech on there now, but the real issue was a worn out injection pump (118K miles on it with 80K on WVO – not bad for a GM injection pump), hence the replacement noted above.
8. Misc WVO parts: 2nd fuel tank that fits Sub frame rail, oil settling/dewatering drum with pump, and more….
This Sub is not perfect - it is 16 years old after all, but it still has lotsa life left. Contact me for more info or additional pics:
