I am considering a lift pump just because I plan to keep my current truck for a very long time and want to take some strain off my IP and other fuel system components. My truck is stock and I never plan on adding any chips or programs. With just a stock truck like mine, is a lift pump really needed? One thing I might put on is the Mega filter.

Just my opinion... But no...

A lift pump helps you if you ever run out of fuel. It helps when changing the fuel filter. But, it's not a lot of help for the normal operation of the engine, whether it's just a daily driver or used for a long haul commercial delivery pickup truck (RV travel-trailers, cars, boats, cargo, etc).

The 750,000 mile Duramax featured in the following story didn't have one.

If you are OK processing air in the fuel system on an ongoing basis then no. Those who do not have lift pumps typically see no need. Of those that install them most notice a change for the better in responsiveness and sound while others notice no change. One thing that I definitely find is that when people have lift pumps installed for years and they stop working they definitely notice a difference and then they really feel the difference when reconnected.

If you want to see reasoning why just cut open a fuel filter at 3,000 miles. Black and white like a cow. Why? Because it's operating with so much air inside that you are only using about 1/3 of the media. Using only 1/3 the meida increases the flow velocity and deceases residence time. Residence time is a key factor in a filter's efficiency rating. Add a lift pump and the filter is now a uniform shade of gray top to bottom.

BTW the Jeep Liberty CRD guys are catching on/learning the hard way too. They have been seeing loss of prime issues etc due to no lift pump. http://liberty.eurekaboy.com/kennedy.htm

Thanks for both of your guys's responses, I appreciate your input. I am leaning towards installing one just because of what John said about the air. Ill have to wait a bit and save IP for one however

FYI I did just do the install on my 2012 with twin pumps and Mega filter under the air box tray. The lift pump install was very straight forward with same components and only very minor tweaks. The Mega will need some time to have a part fabbed up, but this will make install quite easy.
