oh boy- sucks that happened. They need to focus on the bigger issues like the entire other half of the world burning high sulfer diesel, curse ships, oh and Jet planes- a 737 burns more fuel than anyone of us will in a lifetime in just a day- no cat on that plane!

Not to stir up anything, but we can realistically only mind our own house, and we're doing a somewhat poor job at that. On the other hand, I wonder what the efficiency, in miles travelled per person per gallon, is on a jetliner. Seems like I heard somewhere that a freight train runs a ton of freight something like 500 miles on a gallon of fuel, if you break it down. That ain't bad.

On the other hand, "tuning" products that are being used to dump in too much fuel and make tons of black smoke because the fuel ISN'T EVEN GETTING BURNED doesn't seem like a great idea anyway --- and it IS in violation of some already established laws. Tuning company's fault? Maybe, maybe not - should the EPA go after the consumer that is abusing the product?

Black smoke blocking out the sun (and polluting the air needlessly) doesn't impress me. 500 foot pounds of (stock) torque with no smoke does:)

" When running, trucks without these types of controls leave behind a trail of dark, black smoke. "

This isn't true for my 96 6.5. , and I don't see this on the streets and highways that I travel !!

Not only that a vehicle that is emitting that black smoke wouldn't pass the " smog test " in Nevada and probably most other states , therefore not being issued a registration renewal , ( not being allowed on the road ). We also have a , " snich " number to call to report such vehicles.

I would be tempted to call the above quote a , LIE !!

On the other hand, I wonder what the efficiency, in miles travelled per person per gallon, is on a jetliner.

I read a few years ago that a diesel Jetta with three people on board was more fuel efficient and considerably less costly than a typical jet travel for those same three people. Time is another issue.

Thick black smoke can't really be justified nowadays. In the beginning of the diesel performance movement, it was cool - sort of, and smoke was more or less required to make big power in the 2000-2005 year range. But not so much anymore. The performance industry has evolved into a clean burning direction.

Making and selling products that allow consumers to defeat the 2007+ emissions control systems was inviting scrutiny from the feds. I was told a few years ago that the EPA had a presense at the SEMA show (and have been every year since), and they told the diesel performance vendors that the axe would fall. So, Edge and everyone else had a fair warning. Jim

Diesel Power and Diesel World, plus other publications, continue to "talk" both sides of the issue. Both mags continue to run shoot-outs, with shots of diesel pickups spewing giant clouds of black smoke. In those same issues, they'll agree with letters written by subscribers who potest the smoke, and agree with them, and with people like Gale Banks, who seem able to produce insane power with much less polution.

I'm surprised that Edge would risk government action by supporting illegal mods to the > 07's.

Meanwhile, I've been very satisfied with my 04 LB7 with Edge Juice. Solo, I run it on level 1 (mileage) - towing, on level 2 (tow), and seldom get into level 3 or higher; Just do it to show off, or show some sedan that I can pass him if I want to.:D Except on L3 and above, I've never seen any black smoke at all.

For sure, diesel people dont' need more bad press. Wish the VW adds, and the story on a BMW diesel whipping a Prius in a head-to-head across Europe a couple years back were more "visible" to the whole World. It was very interesting that the Bimmer was much quicker, used AC in the heat, and all the heater that was needed in the cold, while the Prius people skimped on everything to try to boost mileage.

It's a tough situation for a diesel enthusiast publication to be in. How do we promote the enthusiasm aspect without sounding preachy?

The younger crowd generally drive the performance segment. Need to find a way to promote cleaner performance without driving them away. This is why you see a few images of smoke, yet editorially they discourage it.

It may take peer pressure to do evolve the perception/accepting of diesel smoke. Jim
