I have been looking at new 2500HD & SRW 3500HD trucks. I was leaning toward the 3500HD, but I just noticed that the 6.0 L engine in the 3500HD has 38 less HP than the 6.0 in the 2500HD.

Why does the heaver rated truck have less power than the lighter rated truck?

Does it make any difference?

The 2500HD and 3500HD are different animals. The 2500HD can be compared to the 3500 (non HD, both "Light Trucks"), while the 3500HD is classified as a Medium Duty truck. Powertrain requirements, limitations and restrictions vary between the classes. GM discontinued the 4500 and 5500 medium duty trucks, replaced by the 3500HD (making them more comparable to the Ford lines).

Keep in mind, a 3500HD used to its full potential (trailering) will require a CDL in almost every state. Meaning, if you need the capacity for trailering, you'll likely also need a CDL, even for recreational purposes.

Thank you for answering questions I did not ask.

You're welcome. As far as the power difference goes, MD trucks will normally have a lower redline than LT's, which reduces the rated power, because maximum HP on OEM gassers is usually near the redline. The MD trucks will also have a different power/torque map, optimized for commercial use, rather than the LT urban race trucks. It may also have something to do with emission requirements. I haven't really looked into the late model trucks, but it's been that way as long as I can remember. Diesels, on the other hand, have typically been the opposite, or with the same rated power.
