All the research that I have done tells me that the lbz changeover was mid year 2006. The 8th digit in my VIN is D but the door sticker shows mfg date of 12/05. What gives? Do I have the very first lbz off the assy line or what

My 06 truck is a D code LBZ and it shows a production month of 11/05. It clearly was not a mid year change.

"Anticipated delivery date"

Both of the examples are "mid-year", as in, 2006.5 model year. The anticipated delivery of the EPA standard was qualified for that model year (or part of it), which is determined by delivery date, not mfg date. Some are early. Both of yours are 2006.5 models, with real LBZ (engines), which are really no different from 2006 LLY, except for the programming.

So will I have the head gasket issue that the lly was prone to have?

fixajet,
Read the DP, article on GM head gasket upgrade. It indicates that GM upgraded the LBZ head gasket in Dec 05. It looks like your Dec 2005 has the upgraded head gasket and my Nov 2005 has the old style gasket.
