Profile in Clean Diesel Power: New Video Series Features Leaders in Clean Diesel Technology on Meeting the Emissions Challenge For Off-Road Engines and Equipment Cummins kicked off the Diesel Technology Forum’s video series highlighting the research, development and strategies used by leaders in clean diesel technology to produce near-zero emissions in new off-road engines and equipment.
The video series includes interviews with technology and business executives conducted at the recent 2014 CONEXPO-CON/AGG convention in Las Vegas – the international gathering of more than 2,400 companies that attracted more than 125,000 visitors.
In the first video of the series, Jennifer Rumsey, the Vice President of Engineering for Cummins Engine Business, explains how Cummins developed its diesel engine technology through the Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final stages to develop near zero emissions products.
Upcoming videos will feature other strategies in achieving the Tier 4 standards for other leading manufacturers including Bosch, CASE Construction Equipment, Caterpillar, FPT Industrial, Isuzu, John Deere, Johnson Matthey, MTU America, Volvo Powertrain and Yanmar.

New Clean Diesel Technology in Trucks & Material Handling Equipment Key to Sustainable Ports
A number of representatives from U.S. ports, national environmental organizations, manufacturers, and state and federal agencies participated in EPA’s “Port Stakeholders Summit: Advancing More Sustainable Ports” [
http://www.epa.gov/otaq/ports/ports-summit.htm ] conference on April 8 at the Port of Baltimore. The focus of the port stakeholder summit was to discuss proven and potential solutions to improve the air quality and the environmental profile of major U.S. ports.
At the conference, EPA announced $4 million in new Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) funding [ http://www.epa.gov/otaq/ports/ports-dera-rfp.htm ] for six ports in California, Washington, Maryland and Virginia to upgrade and repower diesel engines. To date, these federal retrofit efforts have in large part been enabled by funding through the DERA.

DC Mayor Prohibits Fuel Efficient Consumer Choices
If District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray had his druthers there would be no diesel powered cars in the District. Of course, he may also have preferred to reverse his recent primary election loss that will likely cost him the office. According to Washington, DC Mayor Vincent Gray’s proposed budget submitted on April 3, no vehicle operating exclusively on petroleum diesel fuel shall be registered in DC. The problem with the proposal is that the Mayor seems to ignore the fuel savings and emissions reduction potential of a greater fleet of clean diesel cars in the District. According to EPA, diesel cars achieve a 20 to 40 percent greater fuel economy than a comparable gasoline powered vehicle resulting in 10 to 20 percent fewer emissions. The mayor’s proposal would deny District residents from the clean air benefits and greater fuel efficient choices from the growing fleet of light-duty diesel vehicles hitting showroom floors this year.
If the provision were to become law, there is a very real certainty that few – if any – diesel vehicles would be prohibited from hitting the road. Diesel engines are approved to operate on blends of biodiesel, much like ethanol in gasoline powered vehicles, and biodiesel blended into the pool of petroleum diesel offered for sale is common. This fact was not lost on the Council’s Transportation Committee Chair, Mary Cheh, when a similar provision was out before the Committee. Rather, Committee Chair Cheh preferred to adopt a biodiesel standard for the City to ensure greater renewable fuels are offered for sale.

Heavy-Duty Vehicles Get More Time To Get Cleaner in California
As part of the state's move to clean up its air to meet federal Clean Air Act standards, California has taken the extreme step of requiring not only that new heavy-duty vehicles meet ever-more-stringent emissions standards, but that existing fleets migrate to either newer vehicles or retrofit older ones. The "Truck & Bus" rule has been a success as more than 80 percent of vehicles have upgraded.

] is home to the second largest fleet of clean diesel trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles. Nationally, the population of heavy-duty clean diesel trucks on the road – roughly one-in-three – has contributed to eliminating 1 million tons of oxides of nitrogen and 27,000 tons of particulate matter since clean diesel vehicles hit the road in 2007. Meanwhile, 53 million barrels of crude oil have been not been used due to diesel's efficiency and 5.3 million tons of carbon emissions have been eliminated from newer heavy duty vehicles deployed with technology to meet the tighter U.S. EPA 2010 emissions standards.
On April 24, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) held a public hearing concerning the rule that requires most fleets to have complied with the rule as of January 1, 2014. CARB voted to give smaller fleets and those located in more rural areas more time to comply, citing economic hardship among certain segments of the trucking industry and the lack of financial resources needed to comply.
