I'm curious about folks experience with winter starting. What is the lowest temperature at which one should be able to get successful starts, no block heater, fully charged batteries, everything up to snuff.

Howdy
My previous truck with an amg engine would start easily at -25. That was with synthetic oil.
My current truck with engine of unknown build at least 100k miles does not like to start at 0.
My 6.2 blaser will start in -20 with long glow cycles.

So I would say that it would depend allot on the condition of the engine.

Hope this helps!

I like to use thicker oil than most owners, and can get it started fairly easey.I dont use the block heater unless it gets less than +10F and I have to get going.BUT.........I ALWAYS use the trickle charger. Like others have said, If you want to GETTER DONE, first, use a trickle charge, then thinner oil in winter, then the block heater. with all three in place mine would start in below 10f all winter. Oh, by the way did i mention strong batterys, mine has the red top Optimas they cost a bit more but ever since I got them,i have never looked back.
