looking into fixing a 98 don't want to ground the wrong pins

The OBD II trucks +>97 can't have their codes read by grounding the pins they can only be read with a code reader/scan tool.

The 94 - 95 can be read by grounding the connector.

note I'm not sure about the 96's, but I think they are OBD II too.

Places like Auto Zone usually have the reader tools and will check your codes for free, all theirs do though usually is just read hard set codes, if you get a code post here and the group can help you figure out what to do about it. Also if you know a good auto repair tech you can trust, a Snap-On scanner which many shops have shows codes as well as a dealer with tech-2. Tech -2 is the proper tool as it has more test capability/functionality.

Also, my local Auto Zone could only read engine codes, no Trans codes. Found out a friend had a Snap On scanner and it read both.

Yes, 96's are OBD II.
