Still trying to figure out an air filter setup for my 6.5 turbo Suburban. Right now I have the stock elbow with a NAPA 6637 filter(this is a fairly common "universal" filter for diesel equipment). It does work but this is basically the absolute worst location for an air filter. In the engine compartment and right next to the hot turbo. Another issue is it clogs fairly quickly due to debris slung up from the road(especially when it's raining).

Ideally I'd like to find a sealed filter housing that will draw from the stock location behind the grille(preferred) or maybe draw from inside the fender like the 6.5 trucks do. I've looked at the Banks setup but from what I've seen it looks like a poor design with several tight bends, small filter(from the pic I saw) and I'm stuck buying (K&N style) filters from Banks(no NAPA/Wix number I could find).

I know a lot of the 6.5 guys like the round style filter housing found on '99 and 2000 trucks but I don't think it would fit even if I build new A/C lines.

I'd appreciate any ideas/suggestions as I've given this a lot of thought and still haven't come up with a good solution.

Howdy
Not sure if you have access to aluminum welding...but if you do...
-- Get an intercooler mount kit from ebay, they sell all kinds of these with various different sizes and pipe combination for cheap. Most of them come with silicon hose and clamps as well but the main thing for you would be the 2.5 inch AL thin wall pipe.
-- Fab up an aluminum air box with intake from where ever you want it, maybe even multiple locations.
-- Fab up the intake connector pipe to the turbo and your done.
-- all of this could be done by welding but you could also use body panel adhesive for the box and then use the silicon pipe and hose clamps for the connectors.
-- You can design the box for whatever filter you want.
-- if you turn the battery the other way and draw air from the fender and also route an intake hose under the battery it will give you more room for the filter box.
Hope this help! Good luck!

On mine i moved the battery box to where your filter is and built a air box for the filter behind the old opening where the battery used to live.It allows you to build a deeper box.I siamese'd two battery trays together to move both battery's there. My inter cooler will run right through the left battery tray.
