My 96 2wd 6.5 Silverado has just been purring along until the other day. It sits more than it is driven

On a less than 10 mile trip to the office it cut off 2 times and hick upped one time all at low speed to idle.

Always started right back up.

After a few hours on the return drive I made one stop and pretty much kept her idled up and she seemed fine all the way home.

She has a new pump and a bumper mounted PMD.

In going through the records I see the fuel filter hasn't been changed in the year since I've owned it or in the past.

So I'm ready to drop in a new filter.

What I have observed is when I open the bleeder valve on top of the filter when running, nothing comes out the bleed hole until you open it all the way and then leaks out but still not out of the hole.

Checking the fuel pressure at idle its right at 3.1. Wth the motor off & the key on the pressure is more like 7 +.

The lift pump does not appear to be the original and no additional filters have been installed.

My course of action would be to get a new filter & check screen and retest.

Question: Should I consider upgrading the filter setup at this time or keep the OEM setup and ad a pre filter once I solve the problem?

Thanks as always

Re the filter bleeder, that's pretty typical from what I've experienced. I think it's intended to bleed air rather than flow a precise stream of fuel. I've always used to water drain T valve near the oil filler to measure fuel pressure.

Check the fuel flow at the front of the engine using the water drain valve.

Pull the hose up from below and stick it in a can.

With the engine running ...open the valve and fuel should flow freely.....engine should not stop or do anything odd.

I replaced my factory filter with a Racor stand alone unit.

you need a filter that can pass at least 20 GPH

The fuel is constantly recirculating back to the tank to keep the IP cool....

Having a filter with a manual fuel priming pump is a sweet deal.....especially if you run the system out......

During filter change....simply replace the filter, remove the supply line to the IP and then use the plunger pump to refill the filter until fuel comes out the supply line at the IP

Get a filter with a water separator bowl.

I used the RACOR 230 R2

2 micron filter with primer pump, water bowl and drain.

Thanks Robyn and Joe,

Any sources on the Raycor?

I'm on the fence as she may not be a keeper as I should have got a 4wd. (But of course a guy need both)

I did this swap on the 84 6.2 Motor Home a number of years ago and it went pretty seem-less.

Dang Screen wasn't in the filter. I slapped it back together. & parked where I could do some more testing and DX & thrash on it.

I would rather put the money in a filter setup ect.

This is the first time i've EVER used a scanner........ It's an ELF 327 and I mistakenly cleared our the codes. but between yesterday and today this is what has been reported:

Also is a picture that makes me believe I need to to man up and do a full wire recon. She always starts but just dies when she decides to. She runs smooth even if you poor the coals to her:

Question: Those wires aren't right are they?

Solved ~ :D

One of the connections to the PMD had pushed back into the connector so it must of only been touching.

Just pushed her back into place and ran like nothing ever happened.

I took a ten minute trip and actually the SES went out .......

SES Did come back on but runs fine.

I have always thought the pedal does respond slowly when feathering (didn't even realize it was electronic)

I did however get these codes:
