'96 1500 shortbed sierra, 6.5L with emission crap removed, replaced the plenum too, 3.5" bent exhaust, kennedy crossover, timing gears, PCM cooler mounted on fender.

Just curious, can the ECM be swapped for one out of a 2500 6.5? Any benefits?

The trannies are different.
I am not sure but I think there will be a problem swaping the ECM.
If you want a bit more power a custom "Tune" or chip would likely be a better way to go.

If John Kennedy is still around his website or a call yo him would clear this up real quick. He's an advertiser here you can find him just down the page

I had John Kennedy do a rebuild and tune on my computer for the 2000 Burb and highly recommend his work

As previously suggested, a John Kennedy custom tune will settle all of it, and boost power, if you want. OBD-II PCM's are VIN specific, and using another OEM can cause issues with the Odo, Passlock and other systems. A custom tune of your original PCM, or another PCM with your VIN inserted, can be made to simply ignore missing data/items, and stay happy. The power boost is nice, and very often improves economy if you don't use it. They can pay for themselves in fuel savings if you drive conservatively.
