If heat is a problem, can I mount the solenoid some where else? Does the solenoid have to be grounded?

Heat is not a factor - solenoid usually binds from dirt\dust etc pulled into vent port by system vacuum.
Most I've seen have also had rust, probably from engine cleaning procedures, from water soaked felt filter.

It's the FSD\PMD electronic module on the injection pump that fails from heat.
