I just had a great chat with a Donaldson Engineer (Jerry) about my by-pass oil filter system. I currently use a Donaldson P551550 filter per the great one AKA Dr Lee  .

The Engineer pointed me to a newer filter for the same filter head P560693 (P179089 is the long version) its about $18.00.

He also said that this filter would filter even better, but the price is high ($53.00) and would require a new filter head.

Dr. Lee do you think these are worth the extra $$ for what they remove. What do you think of the new standards for measuring what a filter can remove?

ps I've been running the P551550 by-pass filter with mostly Baldwin's B1428 full flow filter (with a Fram TG5 at times when I can't get the B1428)since about 55,000 miles and currently have 178,000 miles on my 97 6.5 without any internal wrenching.

Hi Carey,

Good Stuff. I still have 5 of my original 551550 bypass filters in stock, so I don't need any others right away. The beauty of the bypass filter is that the oil keeps going thru it over and over, so a beta 1000 rating is not so important. But I do like that the Synteq 2-1/2 is rated so much better than the cellulose in the filters we have been using.

What is the current price for the 551550, to put things in perspective?

Dr. Lee  Its still right at $6.00, so that makes the $18.00 P560693 kinda hard to swallow.

I bought a case of the P551550's in late 2002, so I have about 6 left. I mainly called to find another filter head without a by-pass in it to install a by-pass on my scout.

Jerry said these all would also make good auto trany filters too.

I am already using a Donaldson Synteq filter in the Fram PH-8a format as my tranny filter. So I guess I was taking Jerry's advice about 5 years before he gave it.

I am going to chat up my old filter contact and see if I can do better on the pricing. I will let you and the Members know what I find.

Dr. Lee  Dr Lee,

Do you have a by-pass valve in your trany filter?

According to my Donaldson Catalog, there is a relief valve set at 8 to 11 psi.
