View Full Version : Changing Transfer Case Output Bushing & Seal

I notice my transfer case starting to leak at the rear output seal, also slight wobble in the yoke, maybe bushing, or?

Is this a job I can handle this myself, or best done by drive train specialists?

how many miles are on it? the rear bushing and seal are easily replaced with the proper tools.
my question is is the slop in the bushing or in the rear bearing which caused the bushing to get sloppy?
also make sure you replace the retainer clip on the output shaft while your in there in has a tendency to break and cause problems. good luck

It is a 2 piece 246 auto 4wd transfer case, I think any bearing change would require it to be pulled apart.

Not knowing much about this case, searched web and did not find much info about this case other than it is supposedly a good reliable setup.

Found rebuilt units are about$800, while new one is about $1,000.

i have np 241, with that low of miles i would just change the bushing and seal, and change fluids and call it good. but i am also not familiar with the 246 though,if it is similiar to the 241 it would be an easy job with the right tools good luck
