I am a diesel newbie, and have been exploring the DieselPage's excellent content. The "Swanger exhaust modification" has been mentioned many times and I have even seen a picture of it on the performace 6.2 rebuild article. I would like to know more about it. If there is an article already posted somewhere please just point me towards it. Thanks in advance for your help :D

Hi Rusty,

Welcome to TheDieselPage and to the Forums. There is no separate article about the exhaust, but I do have a dimensioned sketch of the adapters that you can use to make a pair, or take to a machine shop to get some made for you.

The adapters accept a standard 2-1/2" three-bolt flange with 2-1/2" pipes. Mine connect immediately to a pair of tapered 2-1/2" to 3" adapter pipes, and then I have a complete 3" dual exhaust, with a 3" crossover pipe ahead of the pair of 3" DynoMax SuperTurbo mufflers. When I drive the through a parking garage here in Miami, it sets off at least half-a-dozen car alarms from the sound pressure alone. :D

If you send an email to me at

I would be happy to email back the dimensioned sketch for the adapters that go on the outlet end of the exhaust manifolds for the 82-87 trucks. This offer applies to anyone who wants the sketch, not just Rusty (is that the name of your truck, or do you have red hair, or both?)

Dr. Lee

Thanks for the info! I've enjoyed all the articles you've written. I was wondering how you got to a 3" exhaust with the stock manifolds! Thanks for setting me straight. ;)
My truck is rusty, very rusty! My hair is only red after I have been working on my blazer, and thats from the rust that has fallen off the K5. :D
I am fixing the "leaks" that caused all the rust in the first place, and replacing floors etc. Exhaust will be next, and I'd like to have all my ducks in a row! Thanks again. Andy
