I took apart this engine to show my grandson what the insides look like. Got it really cheap because it lost the #4 connecting rod bearing and the owner didn't want to fix it. I got all the manifolds, air cleaner, fuel pump, filter. I'll keep the I/P, injectors, glow pulgs and one of my other 6.2"s can use the crossover pipe. I may take the heads to have them checked. Which other parts are worth keeping? I feel like I got my money's worth already. Anybody want pieces?

When it "lost a connecting rod" was it just knocking or did it throw a rod? If it didn't sling it, you might have a rebuildable block if you don't have cracked main webbing. Finding good non-cracked blocks is somewhat of a chore, worth looking for if you want to build one up later on.

Wasn't that bad. The connecting rod didn't break and the block wasn't visably damaged. But the crankshaft is now about 2/10" undersize at #4. The #4 piston has some valve outlines beaten into the carbon.

If the block wasn't damaged by a slung rod you might have at least a block. Yeah, the crank is toast. On the main bearing caps, look at the webbing just under where the main caps bolt. On the outside bolts on the 4 bolt main look on the block for cracks coming from where the bolts go into the block heading towards the cylinders. If your block isn't cracked you won't find any cracks from the main webs, which you will then have something you can work with later. I enjoy getting an old engine just like you did and cracking it open to see what happened to it.

Its cracked! And there are 7 "D"'s, a "C" and a couple of "2"'s stamped in the pan gasket area. Could be its been rebuilt before I got it?? Do those letters, numbers mean anything? I've heard of engines coming from GM with "D"'s, meaning they were overbore from the factory?

If you've got the 700r4 tv cable bracket and rod, check the 95 tahoe post -- he's needing those parts

Does the vacuum pump have a speed sensor on the top? If so I would be interested. I want a tach for my '83 K5...

I didn't get the vaccuum pump or the TV cable. I'll look for the TV Bracket. I don't remember if it was there.
I brushed the carbon off the heads and took a close look yesterday. Only one crack, a bad one between the valves on one of the end cylinders. The other head looks OK. All pre-cups still shinney bright.

All I found was the bracket. I can email a picture.

The bracket is the thing in short supply, getting the rod and the tv cable is easy enough through gm.
