I changed my fuel filter on my 90 Sub 6.2L and now have hard starting problem. After setting 3-4 hours and starting it, it will surge for about 10 seconds from 500 to 1000 RPM then settle out. After setting overnight it would start initially and run for about 5 seconds then die, I

The procedure for bleeding the GM fuel filter is to loosen the air bleed at the top, remove the pink wire from the iinjector pump, and crank till fuel squirts out the bleeder. Follow all precautions about extended cranking and not overheating the starter, of course.

Air could be getting in the filter if any of the rubber grommets on the back got deformed or cut in any way while sliding the filter on. Your 1990 shouldn't have the pressure switch (for filter restriction) in the filter base, and that's the biggest source of leaks on the older filters. I'd give it a good cleaning under the hood, wait till everything's dry, then start it and check the normal spots for possible leaks (filter drain, bottom of filter, return lines, etc.)

I'd give it a good cleaning under the hood . . . Excellent advice. This also applies when you are loosening and retightening fuel injection lines. I use carburetor spray cleaner, followed by brake spray cleaner to get a very clean, very dry starting point. Any fuel leaks or weeps will show up on the dry metal very easily as a growing shiny spot.

You should be able to use the carb cleaner / brake cleaner combo around the fuel filter for the same effect.
