I'm considering just replacing the torque converter on my 86 700R4 because it's a money thing and I want the truck back on the road as soon as the engine is rebuilt. I'm replacing the Torque Converter because of a buggered up nut/mounting pad on the torque converter to the flexplate (messed both up). I don't really have the dough for the engine rebuild let alone a rebuilt 700 right now (7-Eleven better watch out :D ).

So... I am pricing out new Torque Converters and was wondering which spline I have considering it's the original 86 transmission. There was a transition time where a 30 spline input was used.

Anyone know fer sure?

Thanks!

1982, 1983 and some 1984 700R4 transmissions have a 27 spline count. Late 1984 and newer 700R4 / 4L60 and 4L60E transmissions have a 30 spline count.

Thank you! Thats what I was reading online, but most of the sites I was looking at tried to say that there were still some 27 spline units until up about 88.

I was looking at a reman torque converter on ebay, price was right, but it was listed for an 83, so I'm sure it was the 27 spline model.

There may have been some small units for 4's or V-6's with 27 splines after '84, but not the diesel units.
