View Full Version : Timing Chain verses Gear set.

While I am replacing the balancer and pulley assembiles, I was wondering what the experts think about using a new chain instead of using a replacement timing gear drive set for a short term (45-50k) use on a 90+k engine. The engine is in a rusty truck which I will probably drive for about a year, and then part out. Any thoughts?

When you part it out, what happens to the engine? If you are gonna keep it "forever" and transplant it into another vehicle, then we "Experts" would recommend that you go ahead with the gear drive.

If, instead, the engine is going to the highest bidder, it will work fine for you with a new chain, and regular oil changes, for the next 50K miles.

Thanks Dr. Lee smile.gif ,

That is what I kind of thought. I have 2 other engine cores, one with a broken crank, etc., and the other is probably ok. I have another good running "J" engine in my other Suburban, so I think this one is getting the chain for now.

Thanks,
Kevin.
