View Full Version : 6.5l turbo on a 6.2l
Found a sweet deal on a 94 6.5l with turbo, $500. Caught on fire at 136k miles. I'm torn about trying to fit the turbo on my 6.2l na 89 Suburb. It runs great at 96k so I don't want to change it. What I know so far is that the clearance and wastegate are possible problems. Does anyone out there have a clear solution to these problems? Or should I just go buy the Banks and be happy that I found another good long block replacement for realllly cheap?
Is the there a mod to the elctronic tranny to make it manual?

Hello
If you don't mind fabricating or having someone fabricate for you you can modify the exhaust turbo flange so that it swoops forward from its stock location. Or swoop it and turn the flange side ways so that the exhaust dumps into the wheel well, this is how mine is done. As far as the waistgate: you can make your own spring waistgate or buy one already made, but make sure you watch your EGT's because i think the stock 6.5 turbine housings are small which causes back pressure and heat. This can be addressed by letting the waistgate open more.
Hope this helps

Its been discussed a few times about the 6.5L turbo on a 6.2. I just last night picked up a complete 6.5 setup off a knockin 6.5 that I have the intention of putting on a 6.2. The biggest problem is the lack of clearance between the turbo/exaust and the factory Air conditioning system. The truck I am going to install my setup on has A/C. I am considering removing it, as it doesn't work anyways, that might get some more room.
Here is a post that GMCTD posted on that has the materials and a little info on adapting the A/C with the turbo in place, using a smaller evap box.

Does anyone know if 6.5 turbo set-up clears non-a/c heater box?Don`t you wish someone would produce an intake/mount to retro-fit 6.5 turbo(or others)on early models?Like Banks`,only available in Sidewinder kit.

I don't know if this would work or not (I'll try it with my spare pieces) but putting the 6.5 turbo on a banks manifold. The only immediate problem I see is that the exhaust outlet on the 6.5 turbo would point downward verses just straight back. so building the exhaust would be tricky, as well as the crossover.
6.5L setup is not even close to the standard heater duct and blower.
Downpipe snakes down along frame rail, compound "S" curves between floorpan, frame rail, and exhaust manifold .
4wd frames have upper rail 'clearance' cut there.
Gots to do it yourself on the 2wd frames.

Sounds like a winner.I`ve been wondering about this for a while, glad I asked.
the 5 bolt exhaust housing exit on the gm turbos is available in many different variations. You can find an outlet that bolts on that points the exhaust straight back like the banks.
