View Full Version : Exhaust manifold gaskets or not?

I will be ready to put the manifolds on as soon as I get the broken bolt out but the mating surfaces are real pitted from rust. (I probably won't ever buy an engine from Minnesota again)
I don't think they will seal very good without any gaskets but I don't know if they will seal it either.
What would be the best?

Definately use gaskets on a high mileage motor. If the pits are so that it looks like it may not seal even with gaskets, then they need to be filled and milled (both the head and manifold). If the machine work is not an option, I have had success using orange Permatex with gaskets. The heat will burn off the Permatex, but it leaves behind a good seal. If this is a turbo manifold, try not to get too much excess on the inside. The burned Permatex becomes hard like little pebbles and can damage a turbine if the pieces are too large (bigger than a B-B).

Good luck
