Hi!
I just timed my 1988 6.2 NA diesel with my snap-on mt480 timing meter and i set the timing to 10.5 BTDC at idle (650rpm) falling to 4.5-5 BTDC at 1400 rpm. Originally it was 5 BTDC at 650 rpm falling to 0 at 1400 rpm (lines were aligned). Fuel consumption is better now but the engine is so much noisier (the clacking noise). I only turned the pump 1/8 tu the driver side.

Is this a safe timing or should i back if off a litte?

4* BTDC @ 1400rpm is probably the upper safe limit with a hot NA engine (the HPCA adds another 6* advance when engaged).

YMMV, but I found 2.6* BTDC @ 1400rpm was about perfect for my 6.2 turbo CUCV (check my older posts by searching on my member ID 8666).

Mine is timed similar to Brittanic's old engine. I found 2.5* BTDC @ 1300 to be the sweet spot for my setup. It's a little different for everybody since fuel rates, injectors, turbo(s), final drive ratios vary.
